Turning Up the Heat (Pump): Green Skills Go Immersive!

After the success of our earlier Green Skills Youth Board sessions, we kicked things up a notch in June—introducing heat pumps like never before. Using cutting-edge augmented reality tech ‘cast’ into immersive classrooms by MidKent College, students experienced the science behind low-carbon heating in a whole new way.

LSEC tutor Phillip Mew led the session. Stood within the immersive classroom at London South East Colleges, he used the AR heat pump on screen, being cast from MidKent College, to demonstrate how the different components operate. Students from London South East Colleges were in the room, and those at Waltham Forest College, and MidKent College could see and hear Phil’s presentation through their immersive classrooms.

The session received hugely positive feedback, with particular praise given to the “clear explanation” and “the technology on the tablets”, which both provided “good insight on air source heat pumps”.

Taking The Pixels captured the action for Cathy Duncan and Local London, showcasing how LSIF-funded immersive spaces are transforming green skills education.

This is just the beginning. As part of the Mayor’s Green Skills Academy for Local London, more AR-powered sessions are set to roll out across the partnership this autumn. Stay tuned!
