Onsite Construction T Levels Axed

The Onsite Construction T Level, aimed at 16-19-year-olds, has been scrapped in the latest review into vocational training on offer in the UK.

After receiving fewer than 100 sign ups in the most recent enrolment window, the course has a lack of demand which justifies its removal. The previous government had chosen many qualifications for defunding, but under the new government’s review only around 30% of these have ended up being axed.

The government stated that “although this T Level is giving students a good foundation for their future career, overall we have concluded that the needs of learners, and the economy, are best met through apprenticeships and other classroom provision.”

This change will not impact those already completing the training, who will complete their courses.

This news comes shortly after the Home Builders Federation (HBF) stated that there would not be enough workers to build the 1.5 million new homes which the government have committed to building, with skills shortages and an ageing workforce forming part of the reasoning. HBF argues that 30,000 new recruits across 12 trades are needed for every 10,000 new homes to be built.

More government funding will be going into other areas of construction training, such as £140m from industry being used to create Homebuilding Skills Hubs, which will support 5000 new construction apprenticeship places.

Some popular T-Level courses connected to construction remain; Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction, and Building Services Engineering for Construction will continue to run.
